Kodaikanal Club
The Kodaikanal Club is a masterpiece of colonial India. It has a well stocked library of classical English literature. Heads of tiger and bison adorn the walls of the club. The restaurant at the club serves many delicacies of the British period.
This club was started in the year 1887, originally by British and American Settlers for playing Tennis and other games with a hall and library.Though started for social events like picnics, parties and dances in 1887, now the club is a private one offering recreational facilities such as Tennis, Badminton, Billiards ,Table Tennis, cards etc., The Club owns a fine library .The club has 14 chambers and a dining hall providing meals. Though it is for members only, visitors can become temporary members on introduction by permit members. The club functions at seven road. The Kodai Club gives the impression of stepping back into colonial India. The lounge with its period fireplace, the piano, the Leigh Hunt prints, the library stocked with books by Evelyn Waugh, Anthony Trollope, and the bar with stuffed heads of bison, tigers, deer-horns, and a picture of the Laughing Cavalier by Franz Hals, the restaurant with old English plates, a glowing hearth-fire, and landscape prints, are all British legacies. Cinnereras and primulus add to the English atmosphere, and again one is struck by the predominance of the lilac-purple theme. The dinner consisting of steaming mulligatawny soup, roast chicken and potatoes, and apple pie, is a further British legacy. As one relaxes in the comfortable chamber of the Kodaikanal Club, a cheerful log fire dances a tableau of flame and shadow on the hearth, keeping out the chill of the night. One wakes up with an air of expectancy refreshed after a good night?s sleep. The tree-fringed lake greets one in the crisp early morning. One realizes that the lake is the cool heart of Kodaikanal. The Kodaikanal Boat club overlooks the Lake. It has number of boats for the use of its 650 permanent members, and to be hired tourists. It was established in 1890, in 1910 a new boathouse was constructed, but only from May 1929, few tourists were permitted to avail boat ride as temporary members. Later on they were extended to the public and tourists in 1932. T.T.D.C boats, Kodaikanal boats, Carlton boats provide boating facilities here. Annual boat pageant is held in May during the Summer Festival. The Boat Club offers umpteen pleasure and racing trips. There is a restaurant, and a motor boat for rescue and emergency operation.
